Commissioning innovative services

Commissioning has become increasingly important in the public sector, with the growth of contracting out services. Although often driven by costs, it has also been used as a means to introduce service innovation in publicly funded provision. Local government in the UK has used commissioning to experiment with alternative service models provided by social enterprises and grant based organisations, often working closely with them on extending the new practices. Another example is the NHS commissioning the health information specialists Dr Foster to develop its information systems.
